Global Digital Product Certification Director, The British Standards Institution

David is responsible for BSIs testing and certification business for digital and connected products, ranging from digital construction e.g. “Smart Cities” and Building Information Modelling, to general connected products such as “Internet of Things” (IoT) devices and software applications. He supports BSIs clients across the key sectors of Built Environment, Healthcare, Food, Automotive and Aerospace in the safe and effective adoption of disruptive digital technologies.

Originally training as an electronics engineer with the British Broadcasting Company, David then served as an Engineering Officer in the Royal Air Force, involving aspects of electronic warfare, secure communications and cryptography. Subsequently, David has delivered secure IT projects for UK Ministry of Defence, managed development of telecommunications laser systems, and sales of capital equipment for micro-electronics manufacturing, before moving in to LED Lighting in 2007. As a Sales and Operations Director managing specialized high-performance LED systems for architectural, TV/Film and medical applications, this led to into “smart lighting” and “smart homes/buildings” incorporating IoT technology. David then directed sales and provided consultancy for a lighting and general IoT business before joining BSI in 2017.

Virtually all IoT product manufacturers have some key reliance on suppliers for the security of their product, from chip sets and elements of firmware through to full OEM solutions. Based on several years’ experience testing and certifying IoT products against emergent best practice, this session will explore typical problems encountered in this area and how all product manufacturers could mitigate their risk.
